Looking to Transfer Schools? Submit Your School Choice Applications Starting Dec. 1

Education opens doors, and in Canyons District, we believe all children deserve access to a quality education and learning opportunities suited to their interests and needs. Every child is different, and public education isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor.

School choice means providing parents with options, and the freedom to choose the best options for their child. Under Utah law, students who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school – the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries – may apply to transfer to another school by submitting a Standard Open Enrollment Form. In Canyons District, families are able to submit these forms online from the comfort of their home or office using our Online Permit Portal.

For the coming school year, the window for applying for the school-choice permits will be open Dec. 1 and end Feb. 21. Screen Shot 2019 11 22 at 8.03.10 AM

Canyons strives to be the school district of choice, and there are plenty of reasons to choose to enroll in one of our schools, from the dual language immersion programs we offer in Chinese, French and Spanish to our Step2theU partnership through which students can earn two semesters of college while still in high school. More than 20 percent – or one in five – of CSD’s 34,000 students are enrolled in the school of their choosing, or a school other than the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries. Of those, nearly 1,200 come from outside the District.

School transfers are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a school administrator approves a transfer permit, the permit will renew automatically every year thereafter as long as the student remains at the same school and their permit is not revoked. Permits must be renewed when a student advances from elementary to middle school or from middle school to high school.

To guide families through the process, the Department of Planning and Enrollment has created tutorials in EnglishSpanish, and French. Answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the Department’s website. The Main Office at your local school also is a good resource for information.
