Superintendent Appears in National Magazine

Canyons Superintendent David S. Doty is quoted in two articles published in the American School Board Journal about his use of social media as an educational and community outreach tool.

The article, “Network Connections,” written by Naomi Dillon and published in the Journal’s December 2010 edition, tells how the nation’s school chiefs are examining online communication policies with the rise of social media sites. “Rules of Engagement,” also by Ms. Dillon and published in the January 2011 edition, explores community engagement efforts by the nation’s superintendents, and Dr. Doty’s use of social media sites including Twitter and Facebook.

“The days of leading a district from an office and only responding to people that call you are over,” Dr. Doty states in the article. “These are public, high-profile positions and you might as well engage these (social media) tools to engage the community in a positive way.”

The American School Board Journal is an award-winning education magazine published monthly by the National School Boards Association. The Journal since 1891 has chronicled change, interpreted issues and offered readers — currently some 50,000 school board members and administrators — advice on governance, policy making, student achievement and leadership.

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
